Remo Powerstroke 77 Colortone Snare Drum Heads

Remo Powerstroke 77 Colortone drum heads offer the renowned Powerstroke 77 snare drum head in a range of vibrant colours to suit your style. Available in 13″ and 14″ diameters, these drum heads offer a captivating array of bold, eye-catching hues, from deep, rich tones to vibrant, attention-grabbing shades, allowing you to colourise your snare drum batter for your own visual pleasure!

However, there is also an even better reason for switching to a Powerstroke 77 – the sound.

The inspiration for the Remo Powerstroke 77 came from a marching head made in 1998. Although designed for the marching band community, the head caught the attention of drum set players – particularly the clear version. You could be forgiven for thinking, “why do Remo need to bring out yet another snare drum head to confuse us with?” Well, they had good reasons set out in this list of key features:

  1. Construction: The Powerstroke 77 is a two-ply head similar to an Emperor, with a 5-mil top dot, providing 15-mil of durability in the centre.
  2. Inlay Ring: It features a unique inlay ring, thicker than others, at about 7-mil. This thicker inlay ring, placed closer to the collar, allows more frequencies to pass through the drum, resulting in enhanced volume and controlled overtones.
  3. Versatility: The Powerstroke 77 can be used with drums made of various materials, including maple, beech, birch, mahogany, and metal.
  4. Tuning Range: It offers versatility in tuning, allowing for adjustments from low to high tension while maintaining consistent overtone control due to the inlay ring’s design.

Ludwig 402 Anyone?

We found this Japanese video which goes through some intricate tuning of a yellow Powerstroke 77 + Snareweight on a Pearl Hybrid Exotic snare drum and early on in the vid, we reckon this combo sounds like a classic old 402!

What do you lot think? If only those Pearl dudes hadn’t decided to close their UK ops after Brexit and go all ‘international’ on us, we might have been able to get one of these drums in (minus taxes) and try it for ourselves! But a Japanese drum demoed from Japan will have to suffice…

Overall, drummers reported increased volume, enhanced overtone control, and versatility across different tuning ranges when using a Remo Powerstroke 77, making it suitable for various musical styles and drum setups. No doubt it sounds gr-r-reat! on a snare drum (as Tony the Tiger would say), but those different colours make it a drum head which will make a statement on your kit – even if it’s only you who will see it!
