When you hold a pair of Promark Evelyn Glennie sticks in your hands, just hold the moment and just think about what she has achieved in spite of her profound deafness, which she has endured since the age of 12. It’s quite incredible, when you consider she has to ‘feel’ and rely on vibration to sense the music around her and to perform it. How she performs by responding to ambient vibrations, we’ll never know…but she does…and you might want to remember that when you next complain about not being able to hear yourself in the monitors!
So what does she look for in a stick?
As she says, it’s light, but where we might expect a maple wood she has opted for the denser hickory standard. If you were expecting a thin stick – then you’re out of luck! This Promark Evelyn Glennie stick has a chunky diameter of .630″ and a length of 16⅛” finished with an barrel-shaped wood-tip. It’s almost a Rocker’s 2B so don’t be fooled into thinking these are only useful for orchestral ticklers! You could do some serious damage on a drum kit with these.
