Gretsch Steve Ferrone Signature Maple/Poplar Snare Drum

The Gretsch Steve Ferrone Snare drum features a 14″ x 6.5″ 3-ply Maple/Poplar shell in a Cadillac Green finish. Tune this drum down and you will be rewarded with a dark’n’dirty backbeat from the 70s but take it back up to pop-tight, and it’ll cut your ears in two! (Not really….but you get the gist.)

Anyone familiar with the recorded work of Steve Ferrone will be well acquainted with his, tight, crisp and powerful backbeat. You will already know his legendary work with the Average White Band and his long tenure in the seat for Tom Petty, but also worth checking out is the often overlooked work he did with the late Freddie King on 1974s ‘Burglar’ album, or the cuts he laid down for Duran Duran on the ‘Notorious’ album. Can you imagine how overjoyed John Taylor was to find himself working with such a highly esteemed groove-meister both in the studio and out on the road?

Here’s what Steve Ferrone asked Gretsch to deliver from his signature Snare Drum, which Pearl wouldn’t do for him!

  • 3-ply Maple Poplar shell
  • Gretsch ‘Reverse Roundover’ bearing edge
  • Cadillac Green lacquer finish
  • Gretsch Micro Sensitive Snare Strainer
  • 8 lugs
  • Chrome hardware
  • Gretsch ‘302’ 3mm double-flanged steel hoops
  • 20 strand Snare wires

This could be considered the drum with which Pearl lost Steve Ferrone to Gretsch, so the story goes…

Apparently, he asked for a signature line of drums, starting with this Snare Drum in a specific green colour, but the Pearl people said “no”, so our Steve took a leap of faith to the rekindled Gretsch company and this is a result! It’s not going to give you the the Steve Ferrone groove (you’ll have to work on that one yourself) but it’s a great tool to use to find your own backbeat.
