Gretsch Gergo Borlai Snare Drum, 1.2mm Brass Shell, 14″ x 4.5″
New from Gretsch, we have the Gergo Borlai Snare Drum with a quite unique 14″ x 4.5″ dimension! Gergo Borlai is a Hungarian drummer now living in the USA with over 500 album recordings under his belt and revered enough by Gretsch to award him with his own signature Snare Drum.
So what do we know about this drum?
It comes from the Gretsch USA stable and its main body is constructed from 1.2mm brass with a a cool looking sandblasted finish. The bearing edges are set to 45 degrees and rather than the usual 10 tuning lugs, it is fitted with just 8 mini-lugs we suspect, to minimise coverage of the surface-area of the shell. After all, this drum is just 4.5″ deep – not quite a ‘piccolo’ depth, not quite a ‘standard’ depth either.
With a strong brass shell, this drum takes on its 4mm die-cast hoops with ease to deliver the tight ‘pop’ associated with heavier hoops. A Gretsch ‘Lightning’ throw-off completes the drum, holding in a place a 40-strand Snare wire.
