Ok, we weren’t convinced about these when we first saw them…let’s face it, a cymbal felt’s a cymbal felt, right…? Well, believe it or not, there’s more science to suspending your cymbals than meets Mr Logic’s bespectacled eyes, read on – or go squash a felt!
Consider this; when your cymbals are mounted on regular felts, the cymbal transmits its own vibrations straight down to your cymbal stand which guess what, is made of connected hollow tubes of steel; and what do hollow tubes of steel do when they vibrate? They generate unwanted sympathetic noise…getting the picture now?
In this scenario, the extra noise is something like a Gong-like hum/resonance, clearly audible from larger cymbals, meaning the purity of the cymbal sound you paid out ya bread out for, is sharing its sound space with the parasitic noise of your hardware! To demonstrate the difference Cympads could make for your cymbals, check out the video from veteran industry expert, Ian Croft:
Measuring 40mm x 15mm, all Chromatics Cympads are the same dimension as the Cympad from their ‘Optimizer’ range, recommended for use with larger Crash cymbals. Made from premium-quality, high-density, cellular “Memory” foam material, these are a major improvement over conventional felt washers allowing your cymbal to move freely and offers the support a normal felt simply cannot achieve by design.
Sold in packs of 5 in an array of different colours, use them on the bottom of your lids first and if you like ‘em, get another set for the tops!
